So the scene is set for yet another incarnation of CPL and all of its politics and drama, this well known League has always managed to capture headlines with good and bad merits and it looks like this new “version” will not be ending that trend.
Tonya Welch – Former partner of the “group” who bought the CPL brand in 2008 has blown the whistle on the deal and current owners of the brand, this is an excellent read and shows that corporate drama is ripe in the gaming industry despite its relatively small footprint in the overall sporting world.
For the tldr; version of her extensive story:
Herself and three other investors who where working for CGS at the time started negotiations to purchase the CPL brand from Asian owners in mid 2008 behind the guise of a “wealthy middle eastern investment group” who did not actually exist. This group was said to have the financial backing for the takeover which was in-fact to be raised via investments after the acquisition – this fund raising did not happen which caused the collapse of CPL very shortly afterwards.
There is a lot more to this story which climaxes in Tonya Welch leaving the league and in fact quitting the gaming scene all together, aside from this last story to get the truth out. Well worth a read if you care about the league you support.
