Important!

Recently we are hearing more and more of broken graphics and sudden loss of fps, I experienced it myself yesterday. The fix is simple for both ATI and Nvidia users, simply upgrade your graphics drivers! Its that easy. Use this guide to make sure you get it done right.

General Tips

Refreshing servers

Select your filter options and hit refresh, then wait 3 seconds and push cancel, about 3-5 seconds after that the list will populate, this will negate some crash to desktop issues surrounding the server menu and also help to load servers quicker.

Bad company 2 “Negative mouse acceleration”

Noticed that when you move the mouse really quick physically on your mouse surface it actually moves slower graphically in game? The game features what DICE call “negative acceleration” which we can only assume is in place to help console players navigate the screen effectively on controllers. What this does is put a hard cap on mouse movement in certain circumstances, an example is if you try to spin your tank turret very quickly, the faster you move the mouse the slower the turret will travel in a circle. Often it is best to move your mouse slower which will help keep the turret speed up.

More information here

Friends joining you

You are playing and your friend wants to join you but is not yet on your list, if he/she adds you you would need to leave game to accept which is silly. You can however hit esc and add him/her first, they can then accept and join you from friends list.

FPS cap

There is no FPS cap in BC2 for PC, repii of DICE has confirmed this on the EA forums. The console versions of the game have a 30fps hard cap.

It is recommended that you try to obtain 50+ FPS in-game by reducing whatever settings are necessary (see below) for a smoother experience (Use Fraps to see FPS). And to dispel rumours that the human eye can only “record” up to 70 FPS.. it is not all about what you can see, your mouse and keyboard are sampled at your FPS rate, faster FPS = higher sampling = smoother movements = better gameplay = win.

Throwing a grenade, ammo/med pack, stick of C4 or motion sensor

You should try to time a jump so that the projectile leaves your hand at the apex of your jump. You’ll get nearly three times as much distance if you do it right.

Reloading your weapon

When reloading any weapon, you’ll notice that the ammo count goes back up BEFORE the reload animation is completely finished.
The moment you see your ammo count go back up, switch weapons and switch back as fast as possible. You will immediately be able to fire your weapon, essentially skipping a full second of reload time.

Jeeps aren’t just for transport

The vodnik and hummer guns are absolute beasts. Grab those vehicles, park them into a bunch of walls so you’re only exposed on one angle – and switch between driver / gunner to avoid fire. They DESTROY choppers and with good sight lines you’ll hold the line really well. Remember to switch positions with the driver to avoid bullets.

Burst fire

It would benefit you greatly to control your firing, especially if you have just come over from games like MW2 which allows you to simply aim and hold down the mouse until your target runs out of hit points. Burst firing is almost always more effective in BC2 unless you are a very short distance away from your target or the situation is volatile and urgent.

Aim high

Headshots are lethal in BC2, once you have the “aim high” ethos installed into your gameplay you will save ammunition and kill quicker on a regular basis.

It is also important to note that also unlike MW2, BC2 incorporates bullet drop (gravity) for a more “realistic” experience, this means that the further away from a target you are the higher above his head you need to fire in order to hit him after accounting for the amount the bullet will fall due to gravity. After a few hours this will become second nature (hopefully), if it doesn’t stick to close range engagements and leave the sniping up to the recons.

As a side note the m95 Rifle uses the same “drop” calculation as the HMG_bullet variable and has less drop and higher damage for targeting Jeeps and Helicopters and so on.

Also to note, all bullets travel at a constant speed of “600″ however the tracers purposely travel slower graphically, do not trust the tracer animation or “smoke” from sniper bullets to judge shot height, these are not accurate.

The “tracer dart” missile aid is not affected by gravity and does not have any trajectory drop but does travel slower than a rocket so you will need to increase lead on moving vehicles to get a decent shot in.

Check the weapon charts below to see falloff vs damage vs headshot statistics.

Bad company 2 graphics, network and sound tweaks

This information was gathered from all over the place and is current to the best of our knowlege, all tweaks are at your own risk.

Performance and stability tips and tweaks from gamers-underground

If youre running an ATI card and you find BC2 crashes on startup (no error)
- Go to battlefield bad company 2 beta\BFBC2Game.exe and right click -> properties -> compatibility and “Run this program as an administrator”

To get an ATI frames boost:
- Set Catalyst A.I to max

For a reported 10-20 fps boost:
- Documents>BFBC2Beta and open up “settings.ini”
- Change “renderaheadlimit” to 0 instead of 2

For a reported giant general performance boost:
- Documents>BFBC2Beta and open up “settings.ini”
- Change “Bloom=true” to false

For another potentially big performance update (especially with Quad Core users):
- Documents>BFBC2Beta and open up “settings”
- Change “HSAO=true” to false (also settable in the in-game “advanced” graphics settings)

Other settings.ini changes that you can try:
- Undergrowth=”medium” – Put this to low, if experiencing frame-rate issues. This map has a lot of it.
- Water=”medium” – Not really any water to traverse in this map, go ahead and set this to low.
- MSAA=”2? – This is Anti-aliasing, this will always use up a lot of a gpx cards resources. Set this to “0?
- Shadows=”medium”- you can also set this to low to improve performance
- Textures=”medium”- Setting this to low can improve FPS at the cost of visual eye candy.
- Aniso=2 – Set this to 0 to disable Anisotropic filtering.

To fix sticky controls (for those who get key shadow/lag with wasd etc):
- Delete the joystick conrols under foot (options->controls->foot), then it works fine

To run DX9 for improved performance (this also stops random crashes for some people):
- Documents>BFBC2Beta and open up “settings”
- Add “DxVersion=dx9″ to the list (without quotation)

You closed the PunkBuster agreement window and can’t get it back:
- Head to Steam\steamapps\common\battlefield bad company 2 beta\install\PunkBuster and re-install Punkbuster

To run the game in a window:
- Simply hit alt+enter and change your resolution to something smaller than your desktop.

For sticky/laggy mouse issues:
- Disable mouse acceleration in the game’s mouse settings, and turn off Vsync in the graphics settings.

What ports should I open for multiplayer if I’m having connectivity trouble?
- Port: 80 TCP
- Port: 18121 TCP
- Port: 18126 TCP
- Port: 18126 UDP
- Port: 13505 TCP

What ports should I open for multiplayer if I’m having EA connection issues?
- 18390 TCP Outgoing
- 18395 TCP Outgoing
- 18395 UDP Outgoing
- 13505 TCP Outgoing
- 80 TCP Outgoing

You can’t look up-down and/or left-right – “my mouse isn’t working”
- You’ve accidentally bound something to the axes that BF2 uses for looking around.
- Reset your controls to fix this.
- In future, when binding things to your mouse, pay close attention; if you move the mouse at all while binding, it will register & bind that horizontal or vertical movement axes, replacing your look ones.

To enable war tapes audio:
- Change your audio setting to “war tapes” instead of “hifi”
An example of the change can be seen here:

How to adjust your FOV -Field of View *New in Retail
- Documents>BFBC2Beta and open up “settings.ini”
- Default is “FOV” variable is set to 55, but you can adjust that up to 120 (per repi)
Note: The FOV in the settings.ini file is the vertical FOV, people usually talk about horizontal FOV, so you have to convert your desired HFOV to VFOV using this calculator: FOV calculator. Enter your screen resolution in pixels (e.g. 1920×1200), then the desired HFOV, click calculate, and it will show you the VFOV setting you need to put in settings.ini.

For those who are playing BC2 in the same network as another person:
Many are experiencing getting kicked when a friend on LAN joins the same server. To fix this, in Steam:
- Go to Steam’s My games menu
- Right-click on the BFBC2 and select Properties
- From the General tab, click the Set launch options button
- Add a different client port number on each machine between 27005 and 27032 in the following format:
- Code: +clientport 270XX (Where XX is a different number for each system – do not use 27020)

Detailed weapon damage and range graphs

How Damage Works

bc2dps1

Damage its pretty straight forward, the weapon deals maximum damage until reach the falloff start distance, then drops linearly until falloff end distance. Further away it always deal minimum damage.

IE: AEK971 deals 14,3 damage until it reach 6 meters (game distance units are meters) then it drop until 40 mts and 12.5 damage.

Players have 100 pts of life normally.

Raw damage data

BC2dps2

NOTE: i failed to fail info on SPAS12 slug version, it seems that file its missing from game.
EDIT: The damage for normal shotguns its per pellet. 870, SPAS and Neostead deal 12×12/12×3 damage, Saiga and USAS deal 6×12/6×3

Hits to kill

bc2dps3

This chart its just processed data from the raw damage chart, but shows more clearly the power of weapons.

Range its the distance (in meters, as always) which separates close from far.
IE: AUG rifle can kill in 6 shots from a distance of 19 mts or closer, further away it requires 7 to 9 hits to kill

Magnum rounds are values for the enhaced damage spec (damage x 1,25).

Shotgun shell values for far are pointless cause it depends on how many pellet hit, making those semi randomic

Thanks for that spitfire, I under the impression that H&K were against the US “redesignating” the 416. I suppose no one can really tell the US what to do afterall..

    Thanks for your comment.

The H&K 416 is currently be used by certain branches of the US forces. That is why it is the M416 in game, the M does not denote ArmaLite it denotes that it is a US Armed Forces weapon. This is why everything from the M1A1 Abrams to the M4 grenade have M infront of them. An AR-15 used by the Canadian Army is called a C7 FYI, but it is still ALMOST the same as a US M16A2

    Anyway, good guide.

Tested with war tapes last night and wow what a difference, I am running an Asus Xonar pcie with PC350′s and the sound quality with war tapes on is mind blowing, I did find that it can be difficult to identify where shots are coming from because there is heavy echo, but for pure ear candy(?) its amazing.

I wont be using war tapes often however because I find all of the sounds can be a little distracting and having to turn them back on after every round is a little annoying.

The US is already using it extensively and they call it the HK416 or just 416, on a side note, left hand fire selector?

    Here’s the difference:
    http://www.armytimes.com/projects/flash/2007_02_20_carbine/

And I suppose if the American army adopted it it *might* become and ‘m’ designated weapon. Thompson M1A1,Colt M1911 – maybe H&K M416?
    Still speculation.
Back on topic: Nice to see so much info in one place!

“m416″.. this is an outrage! Its a Heckler and Koch weapon damnit, just because it looks like an armalite they just chuck and “M” on it and don’t bother researching. It uses a completely different gas block, the same one in the g36, if anything they should have called it the g416 and then I would only be half raging.

    Sam back me up here.
